Products: Unit System
The minimum overall performance standards required
for a curtain wall system are:
- protection against atmospheric agents
- solar radiation control
- thermal dispersion control
- acoustic insulation
- mechanical resistance.
The above pre-requisites are achieved with the pre-fabricated
cells system (or unit system). This system guarantees a
high qualitative standard due to the fact that all the workings
are carried out at the factory, in an environment specifically
equipped and designed. Here the large ‘cells’, which contain the
frames with the plugging elements are assembled and packed,
ready to be transported on-site and installed by means of fixings
to the building structure.
The cells are manufactured according to individual project specifications
and each element is labelled with a specific reference in relation
to its position within the building.
The junction of these large cells is carried out by means of special
vertical and horizontal telescopic couplings, which overcome
problems deriving from thermal dilations and minor seismic shocks
and eliminate any cricking noise typical of these phenomena. The
absorption of any possible dilation and settling of the building
structure is achieved through this coupling system and special seal
gaskets.
The frames which contain the glazed or solid panels (e.g. aluminium,
granite, composite panels) are designed and tested so as to guarantee
high performance levels in thermal insulation.
The way the cell structure is connected to the building can vary
from project to project. However, it is always designed to allow
the adjustment of the façade in all three axes, thus ensuring the
dissipation of vibrations, minor seismic movements, positive and
negative flexure originating from accidental loads on the floor
slabs, thermal excursion dilations, and so on.
The main installation phases are:
- Tracing out
- Placement of brackets and anchoring to floor slab
- Distribution of curtain wall cells, lifting and fixing of cells
(by horizontal loops) to the brackets previously fixed
- Adjustment of the cell system loop by loop
- Fastening and locking
- Fitting of handles to openings as per project requirements
- Installation of sheet metal trim
- Sealing of interior and exterior perimeters
- Client final inspection.
This curtain wall system can normally be installed without scaffoldings
or additional expenses to be borne by the client.
The use of pre-fabricated unit systems offers a number of main
advantages:
- Accurate design – all the details have to be studied, resolved
and agreed prior to fabrication as opposed to on-site.
- Use of high-tech machinery for a high standard of pre-fabrication.
The industrial production guarantees a level of accuracy difficult
to achieve when the assembly and fabrication is carried out directly
on-site.
- Units supplied on-site already fitted with all the glazing
elements including any required opening systems.
- Installation normally carried out without scaffoldings, by
means of mobile platforms. This guarantees shorter installation
times compared to the traditional method.
- Less personnel required on-site (compared to traditional method)
and more realistic planning and achievement of completion milestones
(i.e. based on no. people per day per metre square).
